What OSHA requires

A lot of construction equipment inspection app marketing claims OSHA mandates a daily inspection for every machine on site. That is only true for a couple of specific categories. Here is what the standards themselves actually say.
Cranes: before each shift
Under 29 CFR 1926.1412(d)(1), a competent person must begin a visual inspection prior to each shift a crane will be used, completed before or during that shift, covering control and drive mechanisms, hydraulic lines, wire rope, hooks and latches, tires, and safety devices at minimum. This is one of the few pieces of heavy equipment where OSHA sets the schedule outright.
Excavators, loaders, dozers, graders: no fixed interval
29 CFR 1926.602 covers scrapers, loaders, crawler and wheel tractors, bulldozers, and similar earthmoving equipment. It sets required safety features, service brakes, rollover protection, fenders, backup alarms, but it does not set an inspection interval. The interval instead comes from the general duty under 29 CFR 1926.20(b)(2), which requires "frequent and regular inspections" of equipment by a competent person, without defining how often. Most contractors read that as a pre-shift walkaround because it is the safest interpretation, not because a specific regulation number requires daily checks the way it does for cranes and, separately, forklifts.

A checklist is only half of the record.
The pass/fail items change with the machine. These six fields do not, every inspection record, on any piece of equipment, should carry all of them.

Asset tracking
QR, NFC, or RFID: it depends how you read it.
An equipment tracking app or asset tracking app is only as good as how reliably it can tell one excavator from another. There is no single correct tag, the right one depends on whether you are checking in one machine at a time or scanning a whole yard at once. A QR code costs nothing but needs a clean line of sight and a phone camera. NFC needs a tap at very close range, the NFC Forum's certified compliant range is 5mm, but no line of sight and holds up better on a machine covered in grease. RFID, per GS1 US, drops the line-of-sight requirement entirely and lets a reader scan many tags in one pass, which matters more for a bulk yard count than for logging a single inspection.
