How to Test an AI App Builder Before You Pay

Choose an AI app builder by testing the same small app in each candidate. Check whether it runs on your target phones, preserves data after restart, handles errors and exports usable source. Record the actual prompts, manual fixes, elapsed time and spend. A working preview is one checkpoint; a repeatable build and observed user flows establish more.[1]

What should you measure when comparing AI app builders?

Use these columns in a build log. Missing or unrun observations stay unknown. No tool is scored from its marketing copy or documentation alone.

QuestionWhat to recordEvidence to retainWhat it establishes
Does it work?Create, total, filter, edit and delete real expense entries. The build, test steps and observed results. The tested workflow works in that build.
Does data survive?Force-close and reopen; repeat with airplane mode enabled.Phone model, OS, app version and a recording.Observed persistence and offline behavior.

What is the best AI tool for the app you actually need?

Start with the intended output: a phone app, a browser app or a development project your team maintains. Then test the flow that matters to its users. A builder that creates an attractive first screen may still need work on saved data, error handling, native dependencies or the release process.

For a mobile comparison involving Newly, Rork and Vibecode, name the project types. Newly documents a React Native mobile workflow. Rork's current new mobile projects use Swift for iPhone and Kotlin for Android. Vibecode's Mobile option uses React Native and Expo; its Swift iOS option is a separate choice. These differences change the setup and maintenance work, so record them instead of treating every project as the same framework.[2][3][4]

What app should you ask every builder to create?

Use a small expense log with enough behavior to expose incomplete implementations: real entry creation, totals, filters, editing, deletion, validation and local persistence. This baseline needs no sign-in, backend or paid external service. Add purchases or push delivery only as separately declared extensions with the same account setup available to each candidate.

Paste the brief below unchanged into a fresh project in each builder. If a builder needs separate native apps for the two platforms, keep the same functional requirements in both.

Build Pocket Ledger, a small mobile expense log for iOS and Android. Let me add an expense with a positive amount, category, date and optional note; list expenses; filter by category; edit and delete an entry; and show a total that matches the visible entries. Save entries locally so they survive closing and reopening the app and work in airplane mode. Handle empty, negative and non-numeric amounts without creating an entry. Use accessible labels and a simple readable layout. Do not add sign-in, a backend, remote APIs, ads, purchases or placeholder data. Implement real persistence, then run the available acceptance cases and report anything you could not test. Give me source-code access through the supported export route.

Which acceptance tests should every app pass?

Run the following sequence on each target platform. Keep a screenshot, recording or log plus a short observation for each result. Record failures as failures and unsupported requirements as unmet; leave cases you have not run marked not run. For claims about phone behavior, retain the physical-device result.

  • Open the app and navigate the expense log without a blocking runtime error.
  • Create a 12.50 Food entry dated today; it appears in the list and total.
  • Add 7.50 Transport; the unfiltered total is exactly 20.00.
  • Filter Food; only the Food entry is visible and the visible total is 12.50; clear the filter to restore both entries.
  • Change Food to 10.00; the unfiltered total becomes 17.50.
  • Delete Transport; the unfiltered total becomes 10.00.
  • Force-close and reopen the app; the Food entry and total 10.00 remain.
  • In airplane mode add 5.00 Supplies, force-close and reopen; both entries and total 15.00 remain.
  • Try empty, negative and non-numeric amounts; no entry is created and the total remains 15.00.
  • Export the source, retain a snapshot, install dependencies in a fresh environment, and build and open the same platform app from that export; record manual steps.

How do you keep a builder comparison fair?

Before starting, declare a shared elapsed-time limit and repair-attempt limit, plus the approved spending cap for each tool. The spending cap covers any plan purchased for the attempt plus additional build charges; record the price of pre-existing access separately. Record the first result before repairs. Keep every repair prompt and manual edit, use equivalent instructions for equivalent problems, and explain any difference in treatment.

Choose a plan that includes the capability being tested, and state its cost. Record any selectable model or default model information the product exposes. Compare the app's behavior across platforms without penalizing a tool merely for using two native codebases. Record whether a result came from a simulator or a physical phone.

Retain both successful and unsuccessful attempts. If you rerun an app, identify the reason and preserve the earlier result. A single polished demo is insufficient support for a general success-rate claim.[1]

How should you compare credits, cost and build time?

Record the wall-clock start when you submit the brief and the finish when the declared attempt stops. Track the first usable preview and operator time separately. Keep waiting for builds and queues in the elapsed time so readers can understand what they would experience.

Record actual incremental spend in a named currency, plan fees separately and vendor credit usage in its own units. Do not convert a vendor credit to one dollar unless the applicable billing terms establish that relationship. A plan's entry price does not establish the cost of completing the example app.

An included build can have zero recorded incremental spend while still requiring a paid plan. A missing usage record is unknown. Preserve that distinction when publishing the results, and state which ongoing hosting or third-party charges sit outside the attempt.

What evidence belongs in a published benchmark?

Publish the brief, product and project type, plans, dates, devices, complete acceptance results, manual work and sanitized source and usage artifacts. Identify the reviewer and disclose that Newly publishes the comparison. Make it possible for another person to follow the same method and question a result.

This guide is the method, not a completed speed, cost or quality ranking. Our current product comparison guides describe documented capabilities. A measured comparison needs completed, reviewed runs before it can support a claim that one builder outperformed another.[1]

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose the best AI app builder?

Define the app and target platforms, then test the same small workflow in each candidate. Verify behavior, saved data, error handling, usable source export and actual spend. Choose based on the observed results and the maintenance work you can support.

Is there a fair test for vibe-coding mobile apps?

Use a fresh project, the same app brief, explicit time and repair limits, and the same acceptance criteria. Record each builder's actual project type and plan. Test iOS and Android separately and retain the prompts, manual edits and results.

What should I build to compare Newly, Rork and Vibecode?

A small local expense log is a useful baseline. Ask every candidate for entry creation, totals, filtering, editing, deletion, input validation and data that survives restarts and airplane mode. The complete prompt and acceptance sequence are published on this page.

Can I compare AI builders by their credit counts?

Credit units differ between products. Record vendor units separately and compare actual spend in a stated currency, with plan fees and third-party charges identified. Missing cost data must stay unknown.

Does an exported ZIP prove I can maintain an app?

It establishes access to files. To test maintainability, retain the export, install dependencies in a fresh environment, rebuild and open the app. Record any missing configuration, credentials or manual work required.

Does this page report measured benchmark winners?

No. This page publishes a repeatable test method and brief. It does not report completed side-by-side build results, a winner, a speed advantage or a lower project cost.
