Under 49 CFR 396.11, a driver vehicle inspection report has to cover at least eleven specific parts: service brakes and trailer brake connections, the parking brake, the steering mechanism, lighting and reflectors, tires, the horn, windshield wipers, rear vision mirrors, coupling devices, wheels and rims, and emergency equipment. The report has to list any defect that would affect safe operation or cause a breakdown. If a defect is found, a mechanic has to certify on the report that it was repaired, or that it does not affect safety, before the vehicle is driven again, and the next driver has to review and acknowledge the prior report before departure. Carriers keep these reports, the repair certification, and the driver review on file for three months.
This is a compliance workflow. The app's job is to make sure the required parts get checked, a defect gets captured the moment it is found, and the signatures and certifications exist when a roadside inspector or an auditor asks for them.
Auto repair shops: the digital vehicle inspection (DVI)
A shop-side DVI is not about compliance, it is about getting a customer to say yes to a repair. A technician works a checklist by system, brakes, tires, fluids, belts, and marks each item's condition. Flagged items get a photo and a note explaining why they matter.
