A planogram is the diagram a brand or category manager approves for a shelf: which product goes where, how many facings it gets, and what sits next to it. Planogram compliance is simply how closely the real shelf, on the day a rep visits, matches that diagram. A compliance check usually looks at four things:
- Facings: does each product have the number of shelf slots the planogram assigned it?
- Position: is it on the shelf it's supposed to be on, at the right height and next to the right products?
- Pricing and signage: does the shelf tag and any promotional signage match what's currently approved?
- Availability: is the product actually there, or has it been out of stock since the last visit?
That last point is where the industry data is worth knowing. FMI and the GMA Trading Partner Alliance have tracked the average on-shelf out-of-stock rate at a stubborn 8 percent for years, often exceeding 10 percent for promoted items, against an industry goal closer to 98 percent availability.
